One Last War: Robertson Hunts Gold in Final Amateur Bout
Lafayette, LA - “It’d mean a lot to go out on a high note, get the belt, then go pro,” said Bantamweight fighter Matthew Robertson, fighting out of Lafayette, Louisiana. He is preparing for the biggest moment of his amateur career—and the final one. With one last shot at glory before turning professional, Robertson is set to compete for the bantamweight title at Ragin’ Fighting Championships on June 14 at the Cajundome Convention Center.
“My last fight was a title eliminator, so this is a title shot—and then it’s my last amateur fight,” Robertson says.
Known for bringing gritty, high-paced action to the cage, Robertson expects nothing less than a war in his final bout. “Nothing but exciting, awesome dog fights. It’s probably gonna be the best card of the year.”
He’s scheduled to face Colton McElhinney, the #11-ranked bantamweight with a 4-2 amateur record—an opponent Robertson claims has been doing more talking than finishing.
“If it’s the same guy, he was talking a lot of smack—saying he’d knock me out, even though he’s never knocked anybody out,” Robertson says. “He’s gonna come out there and try to stand with me. I’m gonna put him down, put him out.”
With a title on the line and the pro ranks ahead, Robertson’s goal is clear: leave the amateur scene with a statement win and the belt to prove it.
